Cultural Changchun, a Civilized City of Happiness
Changchun is characterized by its cultural deposits, which have won it the famous titles of the City of Automobile, the City of Movie, the City of Sculpture, the City of Science, Education, and Culture, etc. The city, marked by the significant memory of the People’s Republic of China, the warning humiliation and pains of a victim in the war, the natural gift of distinctive winter scenery, ecological environment and folk customs, and the outstanding universities with great masters, deserves its reputation of Northeast Asia’s famous modern city with developed cultural industry, prosperous cultural undertakings, and eminent cultural features.
Automobile Culture
The First Automobile Works Group (FAW) serves as an everlasting monument in the history of automobile in China. As the first automobile factory founded in the PRC, the developing FAW has written a colourful chapter in the city’s culture. With is headquarters as one of the city’s landmarks, the FAW has created numberless breakthroughs and left well-known stories between the factory and the top leaders of the PRC.
Film Culture
As the film cradle of the PRC, the Changchun Film Studio (CFS), in its history of over 60 years, has produced over 1000 films and translated over 1000 overseas films. Under its influence, Changchun has won its reputation as City of Film, held 12 national film festivals since 1992, established Changying Century City --- the first worldclass film theme park of China, transformed the former site of the CFS, attracted millions of tourists with its film industry, and earned the honour and realized the dream of its film culture.
Sculpture Culture
Since 1997, Changchun has held International Sculpture Invitational Exhibition for 15 times and International Sculpture Conference for four times. The exhibitions and conferences have left over 700 sculptures of nearly 700 sculptors from 216 countries in the five continents. With all these works inside, Changchun World Sculpture Park, established in 2003, is exhibiting various cultures including the Mayan, Maori, Eskimo, and Indo-European, receiving over a million tourists every year, and showing the city’s inclusiveness for different cultures.
Warning Culture
Changchun fiercely resisted the invasion of the Japanese army in Mukden Incident, and was forced by the Japanese invaders to become the “capital” of the puppet state “Manchukuo”. The city’s long history of humiliation lasted for 14 years until the Japanese surrendered in August 1945. Everyone who comes to Changchun would get deeply impressed by the buildings of that era, including the “Imperial Palace” and the “Eight Ministries” of Manchukuo. Those world-class cultural heritages serve as warning that has recorded the disastrous historic moments of the Chinese nation, the horrible sins of the Japanese invaders, and the blood, tears, and sufferings of the Chinese people.
Scientific and Educational Culture
Changchun has long enjoyed its fame of the “City of Science, Education, and Culture”. With a great number of universities, scientific and cultural institutions, and cultural activities, Changchun becomes one of the knowledge-intensive cities of China. The city is praised as “Boston in the East” with its nation- and world-renowned universities, such as Jilin University, Northeast Normal University, and Aviation University of the Air Force of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army; 107 private scientific and technological research institutions, and 98 state-owned scientific research institutions; 19 national key open laboratories for scientific research; 31 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering; and over 339 thousand professionals of different fields.
